Markus Schulz Scream USA Bus Tour Announced!

Markus Schulz goes TransAmerica… Coast-to-coast, 20+ dates, touching all compass points on the map and into many of America’s most famous clubs and venues. This will be the DJ tour rebooted, changed-up and re-imagined! Through the mid-spring months Markus Schulz will be hitting the open road for his first U.S. bus tour.

Following in the footsteps of many musical legends, Markus Schulz will be stepping aboard his new ‘home-away-from-home’ for 4+ weeks of on-the-road madness! For his biggest ever successive run of US dates, the holder of DJ Times magazine’s 2012/2013 America’s Best DJ title is bringing his singular tour vision to your city.

Wherever you are in the world, city-by-city, you’ll be able to follow Markus’ interstate adventures through his travelogue video-updates on his YouTube channel and the tour- journal on his website and Facebook. Throughout Markus will be in front of the lens, followed by a documentary crew every step of the way, covering the tour for an upcoming video release. So if you are in the vicinity get to the shows and get yourself on-screen!

Supporting him on his SCREAM N.A. tour will be two newcomer acts who have been generating very special kinds of heat recently. Since he was signed to Markus Schulz’s Music Group development house early last year, KhoMha has become a name fast to the lips of EDM lovers’ in-the-know. In 2012 the young-gun protégé stormed through the ranks (cracking the top 20 on TranceAddict’s annual poll) with a rush of tracks including ‘Mind Gamer’, ‘The Dark Knight’ and ‘Vapor’.

Lending the tour nights an eclectic splash of electro, techno & dubstep are San Fran-based threesome The M Machine. Signed to Skrillex’s OWSLA label, through EPs like last year’s ‘Metropolis Pt.1’ and remixes for Datsik, Bruno Mars, Madeon and others, they’ve exploded out of their West Coast base, across the States and beyond.

The first dates of the tour to be announced are below. Go to www.MarkusSchulz.com to buy tickets and for more information.

New Tritonal Album: "Bullet That Saved Me"

The lead single from Tritonal's brand new EP, 'Bullet That Saved Me' has everything you could hope for from an electronic dance music cut, remaining both unpredictable and fresh throughout.

The opening build gives the impression of hard and heavy from start to finish, before sliding into a tender and emotional rise towards the track's climax, veiled with a captivating vocal. The entrancing electro melody takes it right up to the drop and then what was once mesmerizing becomes merciless when it hits. Add an enormous juddering breakdown into the mix and 'Bullet That Saved Me' is as complete as necessary.

'Bullet That Saved Me', set for release on Monday 11th March exclusively through Beatport, 2 weeks ahead of the "Metamorphic 1" EP's full release on all other download portals

John O'Callaghan - Trance Pioneers 006

The Trance Pioneers series reaches its 6th volume and they don't get much bigger than this as we focus on the legend that is John O'Callaghan.

Much of John's early career was spent with the Discover labels working as both a solo artist and with several collaborative projects.

His tracks and remixes sound as fresh today as they did when they were released, with goliath tunes including: "Exactly", "The Chamber" and "The System" - tracks that still appear in many peoples all time top 10's.

This is the biggest collection yet of unedited John O'Callaghan recordings, remixes and collaborations representative of a body of work that both John and Discover are rightly proud of.

The Trance Pioneers series is all about showcasing artists that have helped make the trance scene into what is is today and John O'Callaghan fits that description perfectly.

Music Theory 101

Every Musician, Producer and this case Trance Producer needs to know the basics of music theory. For that we provided you a link at the end of this post where your all answers will be answered.

Short Definition:
Music theory is the study of how music works. It examines the language and notation of music. It seeks to identify patterns and structures in composers' techniques across or within genres, styles, or historical periods. In a grand sense, music theory distills and analyzes the fundamental parameters or elements of music: rhythm, harmony (harmonic function), melody, structure, form, texture, etc. Broadly, music theory may include any statement, belief, or conception of or about music. A person who studies these properties is known as a music theorist. Some have applied acoustics, human physiology, and psychology to the explanation of how and why music is perceived.

M.I.K.E. - World Citizen (New Album)

The tease of the string, the rush of the synth, the drama of the drop and the thunder of the bass… It can mean but one thing… trance-floor titan Mike Dierickx is back.

For his first full-scale M.I.K.E. long-player since 2007’s ‘Moving On In Life’ one of the genre’s most respected sound crafters recalibrates and modifies his origin sound to new, futuristic levels. Featuring the club-floor smashes ‘Elements of Nature’ and ‘We Are’, it also contains new takes on many of his time-honoured anthems from the likes of Maor Levi, Roger Shah, Inpetto, Allure and others.
Your visa is stamped; your World Citizenry application approved – everything else you need to know is below!

"Whip-quick drops, snare-free kick-backs, sun-kissed synths, freshly roasted riffs – its all here. Squinting, it's hard to see any difference in quality between 'Elements' and 'Silver Bath', 'Sunrise At Palamos', 'Strange World', et al. Prepare to pop a goosebump or 30 - this is blooming marvellous!" - Mixmag reviews 'Elements of Nature'.

The surge of his euphoric sound carved a path across floors throughout the early course of the last decade. Midway through he became the leading edge of the elec-trance breakout, cementing its clubland presence for years to come. Since his stateside relocation in 2010, the man they call Push has spent much of his time meticulously sound-designing the next M.I.K.E. strike... Spring 2013 sees it land.

"World Citizen is about building an auditory bridge from the past to the future", says Mike Dierickx. It's about giving fans, both new and longstanding, those inimitable M.I.K.E. sounds and elements, while bringing new directions and inspirations to the music. Due diligence has been done. A merge of the new and the classic is what's been asked, and with this album, it's what I'm delivering!"

M.I.K.E. 4, 5 & 6.0... With one keen eye for the future and one on his quintessential sound-style, 'World Citizen' charts its ballistic course skywards. Spanning the known M.I.K.E. universe and beyond, over its fit-to-bursting 23 tracks it delivers another wealth of floor essence. At its tougher end 'World Citizen's soundscape frays and distorts, with the bleeping mainline electronics of tracks like 'Any Direction' and 'Més Que Un Club' hotwiring the album's ignition. Quick on their heels comes 'No Escape' (co-produced alongside Aerofoil) which wildly oscillates the synths, inexorably cranks the sirens and let's the drums concussively kick, summoning maximum floor velocity.

Opening its lens wider, World Citizenship also offers calmer vistas. 'Galactic Halo', 'Thursdays' and the title track temper its bpm, shading the album in transposing chord & pad sequences and sun-splash melodics. Taking things a step further, 'Loverdose' all but swims with languid, esoteric notes and proggier sound structure.

"As a precursor for 'World Citizen', 'We Are!' is a very promising one – 8/10"
– DJ Mag review of 'We Are!'

No M.I.K.E. album would be wrapped without a sizeable hit of his classic, much-copied/never-bettered known-for sound. Arterializing the album, tracks like 'Elements of Nature' (alongside Rank 1), 'Natural Source' 'Melodramma', Under The Bridge' and current single 'We Are!' once again demonstrate an absolute mastery over the big room. Curving, spellbinding melodies, haunting, echoed female harmonics, skilful drops and pulse-speeding synthesis raise the album's temperature tropic.

"I see 'World Citizen' as absolutely the right platform, not just launch new tracks, but also one to let remixers whose work I admire, revisit some years-gone-by highs."

Back To The Phuture... M.I.K.E. has tasked a detectably varied selection of producers with reboots of his most famous moments to date. Inpetto slide a rocking mid-Atlantic filter over 'Universal Nation', while Allure and Sonny Wharton pass 'The Legacy' and 'Till We Meet Again' respectively through house prisms. Toolroom's Paul Thomas gives 'Twixt' a sleek tweak, with knowingly SHM undercurrents and big room overtones. Roger Shah meanwhile sends the mod wheel high on Plastic Boy's evergreen 'Silver Bath'.

Make no mistake: 'World Citizen' fields trance at its most 'club'. Vocals need not apply... MIKE's latest goes straight for the peak of peak-time, with riffs and melodies that will be lodged in the mind for months to come and creating floor moments that'll last forever. This is the most trance trance album of the year... and its not even Spring!

Dash Berlin: 2013 First Single !

The unstoppable Dash Berlin returns with a brand new vocal anthem featuring the vocals of his latest discovery, UK vocalist Chris Madin. “Fool For Life” is the 10th single coming from his second artist album “#musicislife”.

The inventive, cutting edge production on “Fool For Life” pushes the globally beloved Trance genre to new and exciting heights. “This is what I call the “4AM” sound, whenever I take the more experimental route with a track. At 4 at night people are ready for crazy stuff like this, that is where that comes from. It’s still emotional, but with a good kick in the butt”, says the Dutch DJ with a smile.

M-Audio: Ignite by Air (Free Software)

Inspiring Sounds Ignite includes over 275 instruments, many of which are taken from our renowned instrument collections - including Strike, Structure, and Velvet. All sounds have been optimized to load quickly, and the editing controls are automatically mapped to your connected M-Audio keyboard. These extraordinary sounds include keyboards, drums, percussion, basses, guitars, synths, strings, brass, and woodwinds.

Powerful Creative Tools
Ignite features Smart MIDI technology to help jump-start your ideas and enhance your music-making skills. The Chord Player generates a chord pattern from a single key, while the Phrase Player can provide a single-voice line to add to your composition. Both the Chord and Phrase player include dozens of patterns in modern music genres - these aren't canned, boring MIDI patterns. Tailor the performance of these Players by adjusting feel, speed and intensity. The Flexible arpeggiator plays held notes individually, either as a musical flourish or in a rhythmic pattern.

Designed to Work with M-Audio Keyboards Simply connect any current M-Audio keyboard controller to your computer, and Ignite provides seamless integration. The keyboard is automatically detected and controls are automatically mapped when connected to your computer. Adding or changing your keyboard? The controls are automatically updated and mapped.

Subtractive Synthesis Part 3

For this part of the tutorial, it is definitely best if you follow along with a subtractive synth of your choice. I have provided some examples for each part, but nothing beats learning the principles by actually manipulating the sound and tweaking the controls yourself.

What is modulation?

"Modulation" is a fancy word for a very simple concept. To say that "A is modulating B" just means that the behavior of A over time is controlling the behavior of B over time. Envelopes are used to modulate settings of subtractive synths from the time when a note is struck to when it is released.

What is an envelope?

An envelope is a part of a synth which controls the behavior of some characteristic of the sound that your synth produces from when a note is first struck to when it fades out completely. Most subtractive synths have at least three envelopes built in: an amp envelope, a filter envelope, and a modulation envelope. Each of these envelopes typically has at least four controls, often referred to as "stages" or "phases." These four controls are attack (A), decay (D), sustain (S), and release (R); because of the abbreviations used for these four elements, envelopes on subtractive synths are often called "ADSR envelopes." Now to explain the function of each type of envelope:

Amp Envelope

When you play a note on your synth, the amp envelope controls the volume of the resulting sound over time. The attack controls how long the sound takes to reach its highest volume once a note is struck. A shorter attack time will give you a "punchier" sound, while a long one will give you a sound that "fades in." The decay controls how long the sound's volume takes to drop down to the sustain volume. The sustain volume is the volume maintained when you hold a note after the sound has gone through the attack and decay "phases." How long the sustain phase lasts depends on how you long you hold down the note(s) on your synth. If you have the sustain set all the way at the top, the "held note" volume will be the same as the "attack" volume.

If you are following along with your own synth, try to imitate the volume characteristics of each of the above files by adjusting the ADSR controls on your amp envelope.

Sounds that typically have short or short-medium attack times are Synth "stabs," keyboard sounds, basslines, any synth used in a "percussive" manner, and some pad sounds. Sounds that typically have medium or long attack times are synth "washes," noise sweeps, bass that gradually fades in, and pads.

Filter Envelope

The filter envelope controls what the cutoff frequency of your synth's filter does as a note is struck and then held. Here the attack setting controls the amount of time that passes before the filter cutoff reaches its highest frequency and the decay setting controls how quickly the filter cutoff decreases after hitting its highest frequency. The sustain setting controls the frequency of the filter as you continue to hold the note down after the attack and decay phases have ended. The release setting controls how quickly the cutoff frequency of the filter goes from the sustain level back to nothing again. Here is an audio example to give you some idea of what a filter envelope does:

ADSR filter envelope applied to a saw wave

In the above file, the filter envelope has a long attack time and a short decay time, so it takes a while before all the frequencies are let in, but then they get cut out quickly during the quick decay phase. The sustain is at a medium level, so the filter is cutting out and leaving in pretty even amounts of frequencies. The release time is short, so once I let go of the note, the cutoff frequency drops right away.

Modulation (Mod) Envelope

Unlike the amp envelope and the filter envelope, the modulation envelope can be "assigned" by you to control different settings on your synth, and on some synths it can even control more than one setting at a time. Typical parameters for the modulation envelope to control can include the following:

Oscillator pitch: If you assign the mod envelope to the pitch of an oscillator, the oscillator changes the pitch played from the time a note is pressed to when it is released according to the ADSR model explained above.

Oscillator mix: If you have more than one oscillator playing at once, the "Mix" setting on the mod envelope can be used to vary the volume levels of two or more oscillators relative to one another.

FM: Many subtractive synths allow you to use the frequency of one oscillator to modulate another waveform; on the mod envelope, the FM setting can be used to vary the level of frequency modulation over time. FM will be discussed in the next part of this series.

A second frequency filter: Many subtractive synths have a second frequency filter that acts upon the sound which results after the first filter has been applied to the raw sound. With the mod envelope, you can control the behavior of the cutoff frequency of this second filter.

Trackitdown.net Guest Reviewer of The Week: Marco V

Dutch house & trance master Marco V has been at the top of his game since the rave era infancy and even now in 2013 shows no sign of relenting as he continues to travel the globe and release a steady stream of quality music via his In Charge label. We feel very privileged this week at Trackitdown to have the the man himself take part in our exclusive guest reviewer spot.

1. Thanks very much for taking time out to speak to us! Can you tell the readers where you are in the world today and what you’ve been up to over the last 7 days?
I've finished my new track “Walhalla” which will get released soon on Flamingo Recordings and also my collab with singer Christian Burns. Over the weekend I played at a great indoor festival in Germany called Winterbeats with Marco Bailey, Sidney Samson, Felix Krocher and many more.

You have just teamed up on a new (and banging) collaboration with Jochen Miller called Bash, are there any further plans to work together or was this just a one off?
We have been in the studio together a few times but the outcome was not to our satisfaction until we made this Bash!! track. There is a good chance we will team up again in the future to do another collab.

When you collaborate with other acts how do you like to work? Are you the ideas man or do you engineer as well? We know that a lot of collaborations happen over the internet these days too. Are you a fan of remote working or do you prefer being in the same studio to bounce ideas around?
It depends in which studio we work, if we are in my studio most of the times I am engineering and vice versa.  I like to be in the same studio to bounce ideas around indeed but Skype is very handy for that as well.

As a veteran of the scene, we know that music production has changed massively over your long and successful career. Can you tell the younger fans reading this what your early experiences of making music were like and whether you think all of the changes in technology have been for the best?
It's much easier and cheaper to produce music nowadays, before we only used the computer as sequencer, the sounds came from hardware synths and drumcomputers (so no free plugins. ;) Music was recorded on a DAT tape that we sent to the record company. All the new soft synths, plug-ins etc etc, is a big help to produce a track now and also helps the creativity a lot. So I would say yes, the changes in technology improved dance music. Also, the overall sound quality of the music is much better now than it was in the earlier days.

Over the last couple of years it seems the big room EDM sound has stripped away a lot of the subtle touches that trance, techno and electro brought to the dancefloor. How do you see this main arena sound evolve through 2013? Do you have any predictions or personal preferences that you hope might emerge?
I have no idea where the music is going, I never even thought it would be as big as it is right now. But for me personally it could be a bit less commercial, I can only hope the music is going to be more underground.

A lot of the people reading this interview on you will be aspiring DJs and producers and would love to know more about the business. Being someone who has been on the circuit since the infancy of the rave era, Is there anything you know now that you wish you knew at the start?
The scene is so much different now than back then so it's hard to compare. One thing is still the same, the most important things are still the way you present yourself, and trying to get tracks released on the right record labels.

From your position at the top of the scene for many years, could you recommend three things that you think make a great professional DJ & producer in 2013?
First one is an open door: Producing Big Tunes! Second after making that big tune or tunes, look at the crowd when you are dj-ing and try to “read” them. Don't play a prepared set.
And third: Management is very important nowadays to get you in the spotlight.

As ‘EDM’ explodes and becomes a global force driven by clever management and marketing, how important is it to have a good team around you to help keep on top of opportunities? Who makes up the Marco V team and what do they do?
There are quite a few people involved, on the bookings side we have AM Only for the USA & Canada, Anna Agency for the Netherlands and Belgium and Jay Pidgeon Management for the rest of the world. Remix request & TAO recordings: Sorted Management. My In Charge record label is taken care of by Dick from Be Yourself Music and Press releated stuff is done by Esther also from Be Yourself Music. And last but not least my mate Benjamin, in the studio 2 days a week as my right hand and the man behind the website and artwork etc.

You’ve always been a globe-trotter, what are your favourite things about being on tour every weekend and what are the things that you don’t like?
I like to be on the road and meet new people, I've been to so many countries, more then I could have ever imagined. Of course most of the time I don't have enough time to spend a few days but I get a good idea of what the city/country is like. What I don't like (but that’s part of the job so not really worth mentioning) flying and waiting on airports.....

Finally, we’ve seen so many new faces emerge over the last year or so. Can you tell us who your one to watch is going to be in 2013 please?
For me that's David Puentez, Following him for a while already and he is making big progression in his productions.

Tritonal - Piercing The Quiet Remixed - The Extended Mixes

Here it is, the day Tritonian's around the globe have eagerly been awaiting since Tritonal's 'Piercing The Quiet Remixed' was released in September 2012 - for the very first time, here is the release of all the full length versions of the Remixes and Club Mixes included on the chart topping album, all packaged together here on 'Piercing The Quiet Remixed - The Extended Mixes'.

'It was important to us that these remixes stayed true to the originals and so we worked with some of our favorite producers who brought their amazing and fresh ideas to the table,' says Tritonal.

Those producers trusted with remix duties include Seven Lions with his colossal rework of fan-favorite 'Still With Me', Super8 & Tab, who reworked 'Piercing Quiet' into a festival anthem, trance purist Daniel Kandi on 'Broken Down' and rising star Estiva on 'Ziziki'. Additionally, Beat Service, Craig Connelly, Stoneface & Terminal, The Madison, Ost & Meyer, Maor Levi, Juventa, Dan Stone, Suncatcher and more all brought their signature sounds to this powerhouse-filled tracklist.

Since forming in 2008, Chad Cisneros and Dave Reed have taken Tritonal from the unknown, playing in small clubs in their hometown of Austin, Texas, to touring in every corner of the globe, releasing over 100 original tracks and remixes and whipping a fan base of dedicated, self-titled 'Tritonians' into a frenzy. 'Piercing The Quiet', Tritonal's debut artist album, produced eight top 20 Beatport singles, including five that held the #1 position on the trance chart for more than two weeks.

In a somewhat saturated music scene, Tritonal's vivacious stage presence stood out from the dozens of other acts at festivals like Electric Daisy Carnival, Escape From Wonderland, Ultra Music Festival, A State of Trance 550, and Creamfields Australia. They also managed to find time to release nine new tracks through their Enhanced Music label, Air Up There Recordings (not including 15 'Piercing The Quiet' Extended Mixes, which were released in April 2012), sell out clubs across North America, and continue their weekly Air Up There radio show - of which the 100th episode was recently celebrated at an enormous party in Austin, Texas, streamed live worldwide.
